Russian Wedding Traditions that are Entirely Remarkable
Weddings are pure and beautiful wherever you go but when it comes to Russia they are also traditionally remarkable because there are such amazing traditions and stories around them which are all definitely interesting.
If you are wondering what a wedding in Russia would look like, then you need to read further to get some idea about the traditions that make weddings a great affair for not just the groom and bride but also the families and the guests.
Here’s me raising a toast and admiring the wonderful Russian wedding traditions.
1. The Ransom – This is definitely not like other countries where a lot needs to be put down in the name of dowry because in Russia the bride’s ransom is a really fun tradition.
This is the tradition where the bride’s parents “steal” her away and hide her before the ceremony. The partner has to complete a series of challenges have are usually set up by the bridesmaids – these are only designed to show the strength of the groom’s love (and they may sometimes even embarrass him)
For a task that has not been completed, the payment is either real cash, some good chocolates, or flowers – these are all given to the bridesmaids as compensation.
Needless, to say the weddings in Russia start from all things happy and I really think this tradition is a great one.
2. The Ceremony – There are such vivid forms of a Russian wedding but marriage is only legally recognized once the couple has made a trip to the designated registration office.
It is entirely the choice of the couple if they want to choose a small civil marriage registration affair, where the couple literally signs the papers in an offer and straight away head for a party. They may also accompany this with a short civil wedding ceremony which lasts only for about 15 to 30 minutes. If not a small wedding ceremony they may also choose a longer traditional ceremony (but that’s only if they’re willing to spend some good amount of time).
3. Bethrothal – This is the first part of a traditional Russian orthodox ceremony (but also a very important one). This is the ceremony where the couple stands at the entrance to the church and takes the blessing of the priest. The ceremony starts with them receiving lit candles that they hold onto throughout the ceremony. The ceremony here includes prayers and scripture readings.
4. Crowning – This can be said to be a tradition that is done instead of exchanging the rings.
Crowning is the second part of the traditional ceremony and this is where the couple stands on a piece of rose-colored cloth followed by which the priest places the crown onto their heads. Sometimes friends or relatives may be there to help the couple holding the crowns in place.
The happiest part hereof the tradition is sharing a cup of wine and following the priest three times around the lectern to symbolize their journey into married life.
Back in time when the traditional weddings were a complete yes thing the crowns were work for eight days after the ceremony, but now things have changed and they are taken off after the priest announces the union and days the benediction.
5. Smashing Some Really Good Time – Once the couple is announced as newlyweds, the parents offer them a crystal glass each. They then use all the strength to shatter them into as many shards as possible because each piece will signify the years of a happy marriage.
It is also traditional for the bride to release a balloon with her maiden name written on it, as she begins her new life with her new name.
6. The Grand Road Trip, Whatsoever – Once the official registration process is carried out, the newlyweds set off to visit landmarks and then carry out traditional things at each site. This is a lot of fun time for the newlyweds because they’re going to get a good amount of time with each other.
Talking about the traditional things that need to be done it is possible to do these all things on their own but they usually travel around with a small group of friends and family.
The wedding traditions in Russia are absolutely amazing and while a traditional wedding in Russia is carried out for two days, a shorter wedding is also possible.
So, if you were wondering what a traditional wedding in Russia is all about then these details may help you!
